Between November and March wild trout lay their eggs in nests or redds.
Trout redds are fragile so to ensure we did not inadvertenly damage any nests while carrying out our monthly invertebrate kick-sampling we put this activity on hold from December through to March.
We also spotted a 12" trout just north of Fyfield Church. So are optimistic that trout as trout are moving further up the brook we will see redds here next season.
By surveying the brook and counting redds every year we can build evidence of whether trout populations are growing or in decline. So facilitated by the Watercress & Winterbournes the PBA has been working with the Wild Trout Trust to hone their redds identification skills so we can carry out our own redds surveys next season.
