The Pillhill Brook is a headwater of the River Test in Hampshire. It flows through the picturesque villages of Kimpton, Fyfield, Thruxton, East Cholderton, Amport, Monxton, Abbotts Ann, Anna Valley and Upper Clatford before feeding into the River Anton. The Pillhill Brook is an iconic spring fed chalk stream; rising on chalk and then traversing through a gently rolling, low gradient chalk landscape. The upper reaches of the brook are classified as winterbournes as these rarely flow during the summer months but when flowing the brook is around 10 km in length. The map on our Monitoring page shows the course of the brook and its winterbourne sections.
How healthy is the Pillhill Brook in comparison to other chalk streams?
How might we tackle Invasive Non-Native plant Species?
How do aquifers, springs and groundwater affect our brook?
All subjects we plan to cover at our 3rd Annual PBA Community Meeting on Saturday 25 April at the Abbotts Ann Memorial Hall starting at 4:30 pm.
Three important but fairly hefty reports have been published recently on the water quality of our national rivers:
– The Angling Trust’s 2025 3rd Annual Report
– The Riverfly Partnership’s 2025 Riverfly Report
– WildFish’s SmartRivers 2025 progress Report
If you do not have time to read and digest them don’t worry because we will be summarising and presenting how these relate to the Pillhill Brook. We will cover how the monitoring data that our PBA volunteers collect every month contribute to these reports and help us to evaluate how healthy the Pillhill Brook is in comparison to other chalk streams.
You do not need to be a part of our community to attend. So if you are interested in what's going on in and around our chalk stream please come and join us.
